With plans for a $50 million housing development across from the Silo Hotel dead and buried, a new plan for the Invermay site has been announced.
A development application has been lodged with the City of Launceston council for part of the site at 86 Lindsay Street to build a car park.
Launceston businessman and developer Errol Stewart was behind the first proposed project for the site, but is instead looking to build a car park at the site to accommodate overflow parking from the Silo Hotel.
The proposed 116-lot car park will be located directly across from the hotel and Mr Stewart said it would only be for use by hotel guests.
“t’s just an area that is just gravelled and it was being used as a car park for overrun and now the car park for the park fills up pretty quickly,” he said.
“So, particularly in the peaks, you know Saturday morning, Sunday mornings, Friday nights we run out of car parking, that’s the bottom line. If you get a nice day and everybody wants to go down to the Riverbend Park, there’s just not enough car parks.
“It needs to be for the hotel, that’s what it’s got to be for, it will need to be controlled in some form and I don’t know how we do that just yet, we’ll get the thing open and see how we go.”

Mr Stewart first announced plans for a $50 million housing development on the site in May 2019.
The development, named Kings Wharf Towers, would have consisted of two towers, each with 22 units, a pool, a tennis court and promised to be the first high-rise living in the city.
However, fast forward to December 2019 and Mr Stewart withdrew his plans for the site after it became apparent it was unlikely to be approved by the council. With an 11 page letter detailing 31 issues with the development given to Mr Stewart.
The DA for the car park is available for public comment until September 28.
