Child dead after fire at Melbourne public housing flats

A child has died after a fire at a public housing building in Melbourne this afternoon.

Victoria Police said the young child was pulled from the burning building in Fitzroy North and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

He died shortly after arriving at hospital.

All other residents were evacuated safely and have been accounted for.

Emergency services were called to the apartment block at the intersection of Clauscen and Nicholson streets about 12:30pm.

Police and fire crews remain at the site and a crime scene has been set up.

Arson squad detectives will now investigate.
