Several passengers have been injured when an Air India Express plane skidded off the runway, while landing at an airport in the southern state of Kerala.
Area police superintendent Abdul Karim said there are fears that at least two people who were on flight IX1344 from Dubai to Calicut are dead, and 35 others are injured.
There were 191 passengers aboard the aircraft.
“We are still in the middle of the rescue effort,” Superintendent Karim said.
Rajiv Jain, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Ministry, said the plane broke into two pieces when it overshot the runway and fell into a valley.
“As per the initial reports rescue operations are on and passengers are being taken to hospital for medical care,” the ministry said.
Graphic images posted on social media showed the aircraft’s broken fuselage, while additional footage showed rescue crews taking people away from the wreckage.
More to come.
